Auslan as a L.O.T.E (Language other than English)

The Claremont Project has a bilingual - bicultural approach to the education of Deaf students and at each campus Auslan is taught to hearing students as a LOTE (language other than English). At the Primary school, each class from Kinder to grade 6 has one session every week except in the bilingual classes where there is always an Auslan role model present in the class. These classes are run by a Deaf or hearing teacher of the Deaf in conjunction with a Deaf instructor. At the High School, the grade 7 & 8 classes have Auslan once a week and there it is possible as an optional subject in grade 9 and 10. The course runs twice a week for the whole year and is called "Communication with the Deaf." At College, Communication with the Deaf is a Tasmanian Certificate of Education 'A' course.
