The Role of Interpreters

FUNCTION: Give Deaf students access to the spoken language in the school community and vice versa. Provide equal opportunities, as an interpreter, for the effective participation of students and teachers in the classroom.

PRIMARY TASKS:
1. Facilitate communication between hearing impaired, Deaf students and staff at the school.
2. Report to the teacher of the deaf both verbally and in written form on classroom content.
3. Encourage student independence by maintaining an intermediary, facilitating role as an interpreter in the classroom.
4. Negotiate with the teacher of the deaf as to how to use time when not actually interpreting.
5. Maintain and upgrade signing and interpreting skills.
6. Liaise with teachers of the deaf on upcoming classes.
7. Participate as an interpreter in whole of school activities.
8. Interpret on school camps and excursions.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for the efficient completion of tasks as directed. Required to maintain and develop their skills as an interpreter. Required to meet all appropriate ethical standards and exercise some discretion on how some interpreting assignments are to be best achieved.
