The majority of students in the Claremont Project with severe and profound hearing loss use some signing system. Obviously, the viability of Deaf students' full participation in regular classrooms relies on an acknowledgement of the different communication needs of Deaf students and some system to compensate for these problems. The provision of interpreters in the regular classroom is seen as vital if Deaf students are to have equal access to the education provided to their hearing peers.

The provision of interpreters extends beyond the regular classroom. If Deaf students and their families are to have equal access to all extra curricular activities provided by schools, it is at times necessary to provide additional interpreting. This includes circumstances such as:

* Camps
* Weekend expeditions
* Appointments such as personal and career counselling
* Lunch hour meetings
* Individual sessions with teaching staff out of class time
* Excursions and additional activities such as swimming and athletic carnivals
* Activities out of school hours at which parents and students are required, eg. parent-teacher interviews, orientation evenings, activity based parent/child sessions
* Interpreting at professional meetings for Deaf members of the teaching staff
