Claremont High School
Deaf and hearing impaired students participate in all aspects of the
curriculum. In years 7 and 8 students may choose not to do music or
Japanese and use this time in the Deaf Centre for extra language,
tutoring, Auslan Studies and Deaf Studies. In year 9 and 10 students
may have Deaf Centre time as an optional subject.
In years 7 and 8, a teacher of the deaf is in English, SOSE (Studies of
Society and the Environment), Maths and Science classes. These are
operated as much as possible as bilingual classes, with a teacher of the
deaf team-teaching with the classroom teacher. In years 9 and 10
students receive support within their regular classes. At all times deaf
students have access to full time interpreting.
Grades 7 & 8 (the Middle School) operate on a common curriculum.
Grades 9 & 10 (the Senior School) have common core subjects then 3
optional subjects.
Grade 7 have Auslan as a weekly LOTE (Language Other Than English)
session and Communication with the Deaf was offered as a 100 hour TCE
option this year for students in Grade 9 & 10.

Claremont High School is a regular school in the northern suburbs of
Hobart. There are approximately 300 students at the school, 11 of whom
are deaf or hearing impaired.
