Claremont High School

Claremont High School is a regular school in the northern suburbs of Hobart. There are approximately 300 students at the school, 11 of whom are deaf or hearing impaired.

Deaf and hearing impaired students participate in all aspects of the curriculum. In years 7 and 8 students may choose not to do music or Japanese and use this time in the Deaf Centre for extra language, tutoring, Auslan Studies and Deaf Studies. In year 9 and 10 students may have Deaf Centre time as an optional subject.

In years 7 and 8, a teacher of the deaf is in English, SOSE (Studies of Society and the Environment), Maths and Science classes. These are operated as much as possible as bilingual classes, with a teacher of the deaf team-teaching with the classroom teacher. In years 9 and 10 students receive support within their regular classes. At all times deaf students have access to full time interpreting.

Grades 7 & 8 (the Middle School) operate on a common curriculum. Grades 9 & 10 (the Senior School) have common core subjects then 3 optional subjects. Grade 7 have Auslan as a weekly LOTE (Language Other Than English) session and Communication with the Deaf was offered as a 100 hour TCE option this year for students in Grade 9 & 10.
